Urban legend or not, its a great lesson to be thoughtful in business affairs and never burn bridges. Its also a strong reminder that we all make embarrassing mistakes at some point in our career. Common ones include a co-worker overhearing you badmouth them, missing a major deadline, or neglecting a client. The good news is that, whatever your mistake, it is absolutely possible to make a comeback. (Not guaranteed, but possible.) So if youre in the middle of a tough time, or want to be prepared just in case, here are a few suggestions for getting back on track and repairin g your reputation. The first step is admitting the mistake, and apologizing sincerely. Just once. This is arguably the most important step in reestablishing your credibility admitting that you made a poor choice shows maturity and self-awareness. Dont feel its necessary to say Im sorry over and over again. At this point, your leader/gruppemate/client just wants to know how youre going to fix it. Keep in mind, in some situations, it may be more appropriate to apologize in private so that you dont make the situation worse, or embarrass the person you wronged.Make a plan that suits everyone it could be professional coaching, offering a discount, or revamping a project strategy. As an example, I knew someone who inadvertently sabotaged a teammate in an effort to show off their leadership skills. It backfired, and they both looked unprepared in front of their boss. To repair the dynamic, the offender scheduled regular check-ins to ensure their teammate felt included in all decisions an d had opportunities to contribute to the project. It took time, but the relationship was mended. For smaller, yet visible errors, it could be something like daily self-reflection or a slight change in your presence. For example, imagine you made an inappropriate joke in front of your boss boss. You probably dont need a thorough strategy, however, you should brainstorm some ideas to correct the impression you made such as speaking more formally and avoiding even appropriate jokes.Never make the same mistake twice leaders understand that mistakes happen, but expect their team to learn and show growth from past mistakes. After the correction plan is implemented, check in with leaders or teammates, whoever the appropriate stakeholder is, and share your progress and what youve gained from the plan. If possible, its also great to have some metrics or feedback showing that the plan is working. If the plan only slightly works, or temporarily, try altering your approach. Not every mistake requires a deep plan, simple improvements can also enhance your brand. An example could be getting caught not paying attention in a meeting. Perhaps at first you tried overt professionalism, but you still sensed a change in your reputation. So now, maybe you try dressing better, adding a more serious tone to your voice, asking a smart question in a future meeting, or some other small measure to show that youre reliable and professional. No matter what you choose, it should always start with delivering quality work.As youre working to fix things, be mindful of staying authentic avoid making phony compliments, bringing in cookies, or overpromising on a project. Two months into his new position, he begins receiving letters from the other companies he applied to, two of which inform him he was not suitable, and four ask him to give their recruiters a call. 2. A middle-aged woman has been seeking employment for four months. In a last-ditch effort to locate a position, she shows up at the office to personally drop off her application and resume. The receptionist takes the resume right as the recruiter walks by. The recruiter, busy and about to take her lunch, is put off by the womans intrusion and never follows up on the resume. 3. A  capable HR representative for a small manufacturing plant needs to hire a vice president of sales. Her boss keeps changing the requirements and salary for the position, forcing her to put potential candidates who have interviewed for the position in a holding pattern. One candidate calls her three times a day to get an update on the position. His persistence eventually wears her patience thin; she decides not to pursue the candidate due to cultural fit. What Went Wrong? These are all real situations that I have encountered in the last quarter. In every  case, the question of whether or not the candidate was capable or qualified never even came up because communication between the applicant and employer was so flawed. Messaging, timing, and delivery on both sides failed to  match what the other expected, and in every case, it turned out poorly for one party. In the first case, the job seeker had every right to expect an electronic response regarding the status of his applications. The responses he received, by and large, did not align with his initial expectations of the companies. Because of his assumption that recruiters and HR pros would respond with some sense of urgency, he decided to go with one company over the others. In the example of the woman who dropped by the office, her mistake was assuming that her eagerness would be read as a positive instead of as an intrusion on an already busy day. In this case, she did not get the job because she didnt tailor her message properly, nor did she pay attention to her timing or delivery. In our final example, a lack of preparation on the companys part brings out the worst in an otherwise capable candidate. He was interviewed, so he must have some of the desired qualities. However, thanks to his persistence beyond the reasonable or comfortable, his resume immediately went from the desk to the wastebasket. Both parties failed in their attempts to communicate. Better Communication Benefits Everyone How can you avoid situations like the above? Focus on more than the message.
