What its like working with the most powerful people in tech
What it resembles working with the most influential individuals in tech What it resembles working with the most influential individuals in tech The recently discharged novel Sophia of Silicon Valley narratives the anecdotal universe of Sophia Young, an ongoing college alumni exploring the Silicon Valley tech scene in the mid-90s.The book follows Sophia as she's terminated from a venture bank, ascends through the positions at a top Silicon Valley law office, and in the end turns into a speculator relations master - first, to an unconventional, enthusiastic CEO with an inclination for pants and dark shirts who was broadly terminated from his own PC organization. Afterward, Sophia works for a more youthful, virtuoso organizer who needs to construct electric vehicles and rocket ships. If any of that sounds natural, it should: the book's writer, Anna Yen, worked under Steve Jobs at Pixar and Elon Musk at Tesla. So while Yen's book may be fiction, the individuals and organizations depicted in it depend on reality. Sophia of Silicon Valley is basically one lady's record of exploring the Valley in its prime, and working with probably the most influential individuals in tech.A viewpoint 'not very many individuals have ever seen'Yen has been working in Silicon Valley for almost 25 years, and she says Sophia of Silicon Valley is a perfection of her encounters and the exercises she's found out along the way.Apart from course of events changes and changes to the characters - Yen says she took odds and ends of individuals she worked with throughout the years - the book is basically a memoir.Sophia is a restrained variant of me - I have a much more terrible mouth, Yen disclosed to Business Insider. However, she is me. That part is very autobiographical. While Yen had considered composing a book for a spell, she stated, there was one specific driving force for beginning: Steve Jobs, the 2015 film featuring Michael Fassbender.I really have consistently had this strategy, I don't peruse anything about him, I don't observe any of the motion pictures - the TV motion pictures or the movies that have come out about him, Yen sa id. I just consistently felt like, I knew the individual that I knew and that is all I had to know. In any case, that Michael Fassbender film, for reasons unknown I watched it, and I was irritated with it since I sensed that it was unfair.Yen said she needed to use to book to introduce a point of view that not very many individuals have ever observed and will ever get the chance to see - the opposite side of Jobs, on the off chance that you will. The Jobs character in the book, Scott Kraft, is requesting, unconventional, and fast to outrage. In one critical scene in the book, he asks Sophia - who had quite recently begun working for his liveliness startup, Treehouse - if she's moronic or fâ"ruler stupid. But Kraft is additionally painted as a tutor and a caring figure to Sophia. When Sophia reflected on leaving Treehouse for Ion, the electric vehicle organization, Kraft urges her to leave so as to take on new difficulties. He even presents her with an excessive splitting blessing: a huge fish tank involved by an octopus, which Kraft calls his soul animal. While Yen declined to give numerous points of interest about the amount of Kraft's character is roused by Jobs' genuine activities, she said that she needed to depict the gentler side of Jobs.I think he gets a huge amount of regard as a trailblazer and as a pioneer, Yen said. Be that as it may, I don't think he gets any regard for being a decent person.A parcel of when I state, 'I worked for Steve Jobs' or 'I worked for Elon Musk,' the principal thing individuals state, no joke, is 'Gracious, I hear he's a genuine an opening.' I am completely serious! They are intense characters, totally. They're difficult - they're requesting, she said. However, that doesn't mean they're an aâ"hole.Yen verified one genuine part of Jobs that she consolidated into the Kraft character: his anxious propensity for continually pulling up his socks through his jeans, which in the end wore through the fabric. He did clever things. I d on't have the foggiest idea whether anybody got it, yet he used to pull on his pants constantly. Openings, in the base of his jeans! Yen said. It resembled a pressure relief.Passing on exercises to the following generationYen needs individuals to realize her book is certifiably not an indecent tell-all. It was proposed to engage and teach, she says, not to reprimand tech tycoons over their conduct 20 years ago.I composed the book dependent on the significant exercises I discovered that I generally utilized everyday, Yen said. I needed it to be fun but then something that young ladies may be motivated by - and that is all I needed it to be. I wasn't going after for more.Yen says she's the individual that everybody comes to for counsel - I don't have a clue why! she said. I'm an all out mess up! - and she needed to pepper the book with a portion of the mantras she rehashes to herself every day. The most remarkable line, six minutes one after another, is a play on how law offices charg e their time, which Sophia rehashes to herself at whatever point she's pushed. Yen utilizes it, all things considered, too.Life has not generally gone my direction - I've gotten terminated a ton, Yen said. Be that as it may, life isn't simple as a rule. These seemingly insignificant details that I've discovered that helped me overcome life are things that I needed to show my nieces and nephews, and everyone. This article originally showed up on Business Insider.

As youngsters (and polite kids, no less), you wouldn't really think to call them self-included, yet Wilde has depicted them that way herself. She's not simply being brutal, be that as it may. She has valid justification for being fiercely honest. The on-screen character told InStyle just how significant she trusts it is to instruct children to be insightful, particularly with respect to the earth. It's the main life exercise she figures guardians ought to show their children early on.After all, concurring to National Geographic, about 18 billion pounds of plastic is contaminating the sea every year. Also, the World Health Organization reports 4.2 million passings consistently because of introduction to encompassing air contamination - 91 percent of the total populace lives in places where air quality surpasses WHO rule limits.Kids are conceived believing that they are the experts of their universe, that everything rotates around them, since we truly instruct them that at a youthful age, she told InStyle. They're conceived and everything is about them, and afterward at a particular age, the cruel truth of life kicks in and they understand it's not about them. Also, I think gradually, when they're similar to two years of age, you need to acquaint them with ideas of restricted assets. You need to state, 'No, you can't leave the water running.' Every child simply needs to leave the hose on, or the spigot on, whatever it is. They need to utilize all the paper towels, since they have no understanding of restricted assets, and for what reason would it be a good idea for them to? So at a youthful age, I simply attempt to remind them we need to share this space. We need to share these resources.Otis and Daisy are beginning to try to do their mother says others should do, as well, Wilde said.I think at times you need to give them why rolling out an improvement in their lives won't deny them of nature of living, Wilde clarified. So it's tied in with saying you can live with a similar nature of your live, you can live effortlessly and accommodation, there's only approaches to do it any other way now.She likewise proceeded to include that those of us who have the choice to shop all the more intentionally and bolster organizations doing things another way should. At the point when she began winning her own cash and had a chance to help those organizations, she said she chose to utilize the existe nce lottery in a mindful way. Furthermore, she trusts that her youngsters will go with the same pattern one day.I think [Otis and Daisy] like that it implies they can take an interest; kids do like connecting and take an interest, she said. That is why Earth Day is such a virtuoso idea. 6 Ways to avoid LinkedIn profile picture mistakes - Hallie Crawford
6 Ways to avoid LinkedIn profile picture mistakes - Hallie Crawford Thank you to Stacy Smyk-Santiago, one of our certified career coaches, for this article! What should I choose for my LinkedIn profile picture? You may not think it matters much or that your âstockâ picture will get you by, but you only have seconds to make a first impression. Studies have shown that people respond in dramatically different ways to slight picture variations which affect your connection rate, recruiter contact, and possible sales. The following illustrates how to avoid common profile picture mistakes. No picture at all At first you might not be comfortable posting your picture since you do not put it on a resume; however, LinkedIn is a creative, dynamic platform about connection. Without a picture, itâs reasonable to think that youâre hiding something, not fluent in the technology, not serious about connecting, or just not a big-value professional. Too casual or personal You may be connected with many of your friends and family members, but remember this is a professional networking platform. Personal pictures like trips with the kids or your photo cropped from a close pose with a significant other are for Facebook, not LinkedIn. Also note that itâs not cute or amusing to represent yourself with a shape, animal or symbol. Yes, it exists and no, I would not hire you. Not conservative A conservative, professional picture sounds obvious and yet it eludes so many people. Let me provide some examples of non-conservative: Low cut shirt, tight dress, unshaven face, spaghetti straps, loud colors, sexy pose or smile. Now hereâs what you do want: Modest meaning appropriate clothing coverage, professional clothing fit, neutral color clothes that do not distract from your face, and a pose that says âIâm a confident, highly skilled professionalâ not âI love long walks on the beach.â No smile Are you going to hire someone who looks pissed at the world or devoid of enthusiasm? Most jobs require some type of interaction whether it is external customer service or internal employee support. If you donât look friendly, happy to jump in with positive energy, why would someone want to work with or manage you? A smile goes a very long way. When you take your profile picture, think of something truly happy and flash a genuine smile. Dark background Itâs time to ditch the old-school dark grey textured backgrounds. Instead, go with a white background or well lit, warm, modern professional space. This will help to demonstrate that you are current and up to date with trends. Depending on your career field, you could use a snapshot of you in action delivering a presentation which can help convey charisma and other soft skills that you do not want to simply claim about yourself in writing. Outdated Itâs tempting not to bother with taking a recent picture. Who has time? But please do not use a picture from 20 years ago as it will only shock someone when they meet you in person. If you want to uphold a reputation of integrity and transparency, then take a current picture. Subarray With Given Sum
Subarray With Given Sum This week, were going to talk about a popular question that seems simple at first glance, but can be quite difficult by removing particular restrictions. This type of question is very common in coding interviews as interviewers like to use the easy version as a warm-up question and if theres still time remained, the follow-up question will be asked. Also, in our previous posts, we didnt cover much about array problems. So its definitely worth to analyze this problem in depth. In this article, we will talk about topics including array, sliding window, recursion and DP (dynamic programming). Question Given an array of non-negative numbers, find continuous subarray with sum to S. Not only has this question been asked by Facebook recently, but it can be extended with different follow-up questions. Im pretty sure youre going to learn a lot from this post. Again, the goal is not providing âstandard answersâ. Instead, we want to show you how you can come up with the right approach and how to analyze the problem from scratch. Analyze After reading the description, there are two keywords that should catch your attention ânon-negativeâ and âcontinuousâ. When all the numbers are non-negative and the problem is about the sum of subarrays, one common idea is that adding more numbers to the subarray can only increase the current sum. In other words, if you already had a subarray with sum larger than S, you dont need to consider including more numbers, which will significantly simplify the problem and make the algorithm faster. Keyword âcontinuousâ is even easier to understand. It tremendously reduces the possible subarray candidates to consider. Solution Again, think about the problem by yourself before reading the rest of this post. The most naive solution is obvious. You can use 2 loops to check all continuous subarrays and see if any of them sum up to S. The time complexity is O(N^2) and apparently is not ideal. Lets talk about how to optimize it. As analyzed above, we should take advantage of non-negative numbers. If the analysis doesnt sound familiar to you, I highly recommend you check If a String Contains an Anagram of Another String. Youll see how similar the approach is, although its a string problem. Well use the same technique sliding window. Start with two pointers that represent the subarray. If the sum of current subarray is smaller than S, move the end pointer one step forward. If the sum is larger than S, move the start pointer one step forward. Once the current sum equals to S, we found the target. The reason we can use sliding window here is that adding more numbers can only increase the current sum and the two pointers never need to go back to search candidates. This makes the algorithm has O(N) time complexity with no extra memory used. Follow-up What if we remove the two restrictions, so the problem becomes Given an array of numbers, find subarray with sum to S. Again, lets start with the most naive approach check all subarray candidates. As you can see, even this approach is not easy to implement. First, you cant use 2 or more loops to get all subarrays. Second, there are totally 2^N subarrays. The most important lesson here whenever you see issues like this (cant use loops to check all possibilities or an exponential number of candidates), you should immediately think of recursion or dynamic programming. Another reason you should think of recursion is that the problem can be divided into sub-problems. Suppose you want to include the first element a[0], then the problem becomes to find subarray from a[1:N] with sum to S-a[0]. Similarly, if a[0] is not included, we just need to solve the problem from a[1:N] with sum to S. This should be very straightforward to you and it shouldnt be hard to implement the code. DP (dynamic programming) The downside of the above recursive solution is time efficiency. As you can see that many subarrays have been calculated for multiple times. Thus, the most common way to optimize this is to save temporary results into memory, which is so-called dynamic programming. Check A Step by Step Guide to Dynamic Programming if you want to know more. The first step is to figure out how to denote a sub-problem. The sub-problem here is to find subarray from a[i:N] with sum to M. Therefore, we can use (i, M) to denote a sub-problem and the result can be saved in a 2D array. The high-level pseudo code is like this: In a nutshell, if the sub-problem has been solved, return directly. Otherwise, solve the two sub-problem (with and without a[i]). The last step is to store the result back to memory. Takeaways I hope you can be very sensitive to words like ânon-negativeâ and âcontinuousâ. This is at least the 4th time weve seen sliding window technique, although previously we were using in string problems. whenever you see issues like (cant use loops to check all possibilities or an exponential number of candidates), you should immediately think of recursion or dynamic programming. The dynamic programming solution can be optional.

He despite everything worked at Ladders (the organization he served to establish in 2003), he wasn't searching for a vocation, and his LinkedIn profile was all the profession advancement he wanted to seek after. Be that as it may, he chose he expected to assemble an official resume to speak to his profession and achievements.Turns out he previously had the makings of a resume thus do you and almost every other person. Dispersed over the Web are the subtleties of your vocation in bits and bytes that in are the bits of a far reaching resume. To an accomplished resume essayist corporate memoirs, graduated class destinations, endless informal organization profiles, news inclusion of your own and corporate accomplishments, even administrative report s and corporate guarantee can involve an intensive bookkeeping of your expert career.Using your online profiles as semi-crude material can spare a ton of time and exertion in making another resume, yet think of it as a skeleton, said Irene Marshall, an affirmed proficient resume author who works with Ladders and aided Douzet design a resume. A dispersed online nearness needs center and won't speak to what your identity is or what you can do, she said. It additionally presents the danger of distorting or humiliating you. From the about us page at organizations you no longer work for to negative news stories and informal organization locales with humiliating photographs, the information track you left during your prominent profession won't just lead enrollment specialists and potential bosses to your door, it might alarm them away.Marshall, an accomplished vocation mentor and resume author who went through four years as a selection representative at Robert Half International before col laborating with Ladders, had the option to form a full resume for Douzet dependent on those archives and a short discussion. The outcome: I look great in that continue, Douzet said. I felt that Irene had worked admirably at introducing and situating my accomplishments in the course of recent years. Employing Irene resembled recruiting a top-level promoting organization to create my advertising campaign.Meat on the bones Marshall started recreating Douzet's vocation by assessing his LinkedIn profile, which she said was definite yet not continue prepared. It served more as a timetable and added some meat to the bones of information she found on the Web, she said. It's frequently a smart thought to review a resume from the base â" beginning with data about instruction, early profession and other data that tends not to change or be definitely rehashed to show how they apply to a present place of employment search, Marshall said. Regardless of whether it's your resume or somebody else's, you need to realize how to pose the correct inquiries, Marshall said. 'What did you do?' I needed to ask him. He composed the marketable strategy and raised $800,000 and afterward another $7 million. That was acceptable. Did you employ and deal with the key staff? Indeed, yes he did. That is important.A startup can be two folks in a carport, however when you take a gander at the quick development of Ladders, he and Marc (Cenedella, Ladders organizer and CEO), more likely than not employed the correct individuals around them, Marshall said. In Silicon Valley, particularly during the dotcom crash, you saw a ton of organizations descending in light of the fact that there were all these folks who didn't have the foggiest idea how to enlist the opportune individuals around them.If Douzet had been searching for an occupation as boss technique official or rainmaker for another startup, it would have been increasingly critical to concentrate on the capacity to assemble a trustworthy field-tested strategy and fund-raise, Marshall said. This brought about a more excellent resume!

Success is an Iceberg Reveal Whats Below the Surface in Your Job Search
Success is an Iceberg Reveal Whats Below the Surface in Your Job Search I was thinking about icebergs the other day. Perhaps because it was over 90 º, I had just completed 20,000 steps and would have killed for an Italian ice (which would have defeated the purpose of walking those 20,000 steps.) Italian ice became snow cone, that became iceberg, that led to icebergsâ"what a great way to visualize a job search. Hereâs an iceberg fact to start out. Typically, only one-tenth of the volume of an iceberg is above water. The shape and size of the underwater portion, the most critical thing to know about an iceberg, can be difficult to judge by looking at the portion above the surface. Well, that pretty much describes a job search. Your accomplishments, what employers see through your resumé, LinkedIn profile page and other marketing tools and social media, is about one tenth of who you are. What they donât see is the most important part; who you really are, your authentic self. Whatâs below the surface? Think about it. The 90% of the iceberg that is below the surface, the things an employer canât see are why youâre hired. Youâre not hired because of your resumé. Youâre hired because you let an employer see your skills, will and fit. In a successful job search: You know what youâre good at, and what youâre not good at and how that fits with the position and within the organization. Youâre able to envision the needs of the organization and able to tailor your interview to speak directly to your value. You prove that you bring energy, drive and curiosity, to everything you do. Beautiful ice sculptures. I get Iâm carrying the iceberg analogy a bit far; one more point. A few years back my family took a cruise to Alaska. Lots of oohs and aahs when seeing glaciers for the first time. Hereâs another iceberg fact. As glaciers creep over land, meltwater fills the crevasses and later freezes. The combination of ice and air bubbles causes sunlight shining on the icebergs to refract, coloring the ice spectacular shades of blue, green, and white. Color may also indicate age; blue icebergs are old, and green ones contain algae and are young. Icebergs come in a variety of shapes and sizes, some long and flat, others towering and massive. Really, they are beautiful and each unique. The point is, in your job search let an employer see what has driven your success by being personable, sharing information about yourself and turning the interview into a conversation. People hire people they like. Give honest and sincere answers. Itâs great you can find answers to interview questions but the responses are generic at best. Develop responses that show who you are. Become genuinely interested in the interviewer, recruiter or hiring manager. Ask questions. Iceberg Strong. I canât help myself. The last iceberg fact. Icebergs are about 10% as strong as concrete. This may not seem very hard, but its a lot harder than ice you make in your freezer. A ship (the employer) colliding with an iceberg (thatâs you) almost certainly means disaster due to the enormous momentum involved and potentially massive contact region. The ice can literally generate hundreds of tons of force on a ships hull, causing it to buckle, dent, crumple, and even get you hired. Image Credit: Shutterstock

5 Steps to Recording a Video Interview
5 Steps to Recording a Video Interview Unless you are a massive extrovert and love being the centre of attention most people donât particularly likes being filmed. The thought of having every word that comes out of your mouth and every grimace being caught on camera so that it can be watch over and over again, can make even the most confident of communicators come out in a cold sweat. But due to the increasing ability of people to film themselves, the reduction in costs of video platform software and cloud storage, and the time savings and flexibility it provides recruiters, the video interview is unlikely to go away anytime soon. In our day-to-day lives we are interacting with cameras and video more and more. People regularly use smartphones to film content to post online and we increasingly use tools such as Skype and Facetime to speak to friends family and conduct meetings. But until being filmed becomes second nature, how do you ensure that your video interviews are as polishing as possible? Here are 5 tips on how to record a successful video interview even though you may not feel entirely comfortable with the process. 1) Check the tech It doesnât exactly fill a recruiter with confidence regarding the competence of a candidate if they play a video recording, only to see the interviewee looking under their laptop, tapping on the microphone or scrambling around under the desk. Therefore, before you open up the video interview make sure everything is plugged in and all of the tech works. Information will usually be provided by the recruiter or the software provider regarding the requirements in terms of browsers, broadband speed and how to manage your privacy settings to ensure both your webcam and microphone are active. Read the information carefully and make sure your technology is sufficient before starting the interview. If something goes wrong beyond your control technical support should be available from the recruiter or the software provider. 2) Dress to impress A video interview allows the interviewee to conduct the process in their own time and where ever they feel comfortable. You may choose to engage with the process in your own living room, but just because this is your domain and you usually lounge around the house in a t-shirt and track suit bottoms doesnât mean you should. It is still an interview, so all the rules regarding how to dress for an interview still applyâ¦at least from the waist up! 3) The perfect surroundings When preparing your surrounds for a video interview you should adopt the same approach as if you were trying to sell your house. To maximise your chances of success it is much better to keep it simple and neutral. Having no mess or clutter on view shouldnât need to be stated, but also avoid weird paintings, bright wall paper and anything else that might distract the viewer. You may think having your âSalesperson on the Yearâ certificate hanging in the background may enhance your chances but its authenticity canât be verified and it may actually distract the recruiterâs attention away from the answers youâre providing. Also, as well as visual distractions, audio ones should be kept to a minimum. Make sure all TVs and radios are off, the kids and pets are locked away in a different room and conduct the interview away from any noisy appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines. 4) Smile, youâre on camera It is strange how some peoplesâ behaviour changes when a camera is pointed at them. Some peoplesâ initial reaction is to immediately run out of shot altogether. Unfortunately this isnât an option during a video interview. However for those who do engage the following behaviours should also be avoided. Donât look around the camera lenses, look directly at it. Donât watch the image of yourself, look at the camera. Donât stare incessantly. Break your gaze on occasion. Smile, but donât over so it. To avoid all of these scenarios the best practise is to imagine the camera is a person and behave exactly as you should in a face-to-face interview. Other circumstances that should be avoided are inadequate lighting so that you look like a silhouetted Bond villain, and having the camera too low giving the recruiter a view staring directly up into your nostrils. 5) Great Expectations It will be up to the recruiter whether they allow you to retake the questions or not, but usually they will want it to be spontaneous so they get a good feel for your personality, experience and expertise just like in a real interview scenario. If this is the case they wonât be expecting a completely polished performance. So, donât let the nerves get the better of you and try not to get increasingly stressed because the interview is being recorded. The recruiter will expect the odd pause, stumble and fidget just like in a face-to-face interview. Donât be too self-conscious, but just as if it was a face-to-to face meeting try and keep them to a minimum. If you do make a mistake, donât let it throw you. Just apologise, compose yourself and correct yourself just like you would in a real life scenario. You would think most of the above would be common sense, but it is amazing how many people have made the above errors in the short term that we have introduced video interviewing as part of our service. By taking a little time to prepare before recording a video interview you will greatly increase your chances of landing the job which will take you to the next level in your career.
